Earth Day Environmental limousines..

The first Earth Day was organized in 1970 to promote the ideas of ecology, encourage respect for life on earth, and highlight growing concern over pollution of the soil, air, and water. Now, as the fight for a clean environment continues, everyone is invited to be a part of this environmental crusade on April 22nd 2008.

W Hotels Worldwide (www.whotels.com) will do its part to curb carbon footprints by introducing a program that will provide guests with free Puma bicycles and helmets, as an alternative to cars. It has other earth-friendly options, too, including the Spring Fling Package, which includes a donation of 100 trees to the Trees of the Future organization. Another is the Green Wheels program; this is a limousine service using luxury hybrids or ethanol powered cars for the same rates as more traditional vehicles.

Over the years governments have continually spent taxpayers money on motorways and the like while neglecting the need to improve public transport. The population overflow caused primarily by the lack of affordable housing has led to the inevitable spread of suburbia and the subsequent reliance of its occupants on the car as their primary mode of transportation. Although the focus of road building funds on suburban growth has led to job creation in the suburbs at the expense of jobs in urban areas, there is a lot of necessary logistical support for these satellite areas that relies solely on the road as its lifeline.

While it may be impossible for us as individuals to control where people live or where they work, we can make difference to how much of a carbon footprint we leave behind. From being environmentally aware when it comes to buying household appliances, fuel efficient cars, even when it comes to hiring limos. Being green can make a difference. By hiring a limo that is big enough, not necessarily the biggest; by asking if the hire company has luxury hybrid or ethanol powered vehicles in their fleet and using these as an alternative.

We can only save the planet the planet if we are environmentally attuned to the needs of the future. Being green is part of that future.
