The Most Winning Prom Queen

Prom night is something most students look forward to. It is a time to celebrate the end of the school year with most students also graduating it is the beginning of a new era for them. For some people just going to the prom, is very special in itself…

Veronica Claire, 19, is suffering from desmoplastic small round cell tumour, a rare and aggressive form of cancer in her abdomen. She had travelled to New York City twice to try experimental drugs. They helped for a while, and then Veronica's body started shutting down. Veronica’s little sister squirmed and pointed out the window as the limousine cruised up the highway and past "sissy's hospital." "Don't worry about that," she told seven-year-old Kimberly. It was Saturday night and the prom queen was on her way to the ball.

As soon as Veronica said she wanted to go to the prom, Monica Brandt, her step-sister said she would be her date. Part of the preparations included Veronica's three aunts raising the money to pay the limo to drive her around the city before the prom. Veronica had picked out corsages for her and her date - each with two white roses and ribbons in blue and peach to match their dresses. Veronica and Monica dumped the water from their bottles into champagne glasses pulled from a shelf inside the limousine.

Veronica stopped going to school in the spring, but the staff and students rallied in late May to throw a special graduation ceremony for her. As a surprise, they also crowned her queen of the prom. At the time, she promised she would be at the dance. She wore her tiara and her blue prom queen sash in the limo. Gold sparkles from the letters sprinkled all over her arms.

The limousine pulled up to the Landmark Theatre right on time. Veronica put on a pair of sunglasses her mother brought so she could look like a movie star. Veronica's parents helped her out of the limo. The crowd cheered, then grew silent, cameras flashed; the prom queen and her date, stepped out of the limousine and walked the red carpet leading into the prom.
